THE CITY Prosecution Office indicted a police officer for frustrated arson and illegal possession of firearms after he allegedly tried to set fire to a bundle of police documents while in his cell at the Investigation and Detection Management Service office.
The information reaching the Office of the Clerk of Court yesterday showed that Prosecutor Faizal Padate found probable cause on the evidence presented by investigators who sued PO1 Arnel Bongo of the Compostela Valley Police Provincial Office for the two separate offences.
The accused is directed to raise P80,000 as bail bond for his illegal possession of firearms charge and P200,000 for the charge of frustrated arson.
Last July 27, members of the Investigative and Detective Management Branch filed the charges before the City Prosecutor’s Office against Bongo.
The investigation report from the said office claimed that around 1:30 a.m. last Sunday, Bongo was having a drinking session in a bar along Torres Street. Bongo was apparently drunk when he argued with the bar’s disc jockey, identified as Bert Marvell, 28.
Responding police officers from Central 911 apprehended the officer and brought him to the Davao City Police Office. They also seized from his possession a .40 caliber pistol.
The report said Bongo failed to provide the documents supporting the legality of carrying a firearm.
The Davao Police Regional Office had earlier warned all police officers to register their personal firearms. While Bongo was inside the jail, however, he set fire to a piece of paper and threw it into a bundle of police documents beside the cell. The investigators immediately doused the fire.
