3 ‘child warriors’ surrender

THE MILITARYreported the surrender of three child warriors in three separate areas in the Davao Region.
Capt. Emmanuel Garcia, spokesperson of the 10th Infantry Division based in Camp Apolinario, Panacan, said the latest surrender occured around 7 a.m. yesterday in Barangay Tagaytay, Magsaysay, Davao del Sur where two rebels, including a 17-year-old minor, surrendered to the members of the 39th Infantry Battalion.
He identified the surrenderees as Alfonso Parasa alias Amar, 26, and his 17-year-old cousin, both members of the Front Committee 72. Garcia said both rebels yielded two Armalite rifles.
Two other minors, one in Barangay Dumlan, Monkayo last July 23 and another in Cateel, Davao Oriental last July 16.
Lt. Col. Oliver Artuz, commander of the 39th IB, said the minor has been turned over to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for proper care and assured of assistance from the government.

Maj. Gen. Carlos Holganza, commander of the 10th ID said the latest surrender of child warriors only prove their suspicions that rebels are employing minors in their organization.
They do not truly respect the Comprehensive Agreement on the Respect for Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, particularly its provisions on the respect and protection of children from physical and psychological harm, he said.
The military organization itself is accused of recruiting minors in its ranks with the release of 17-year-old Janus, not his real name to protect his rights, by the New People’s Army early this month. Janus was abducted by the rebels along with another soldier in Monkayo, Compostela Valley on June 19.
