Editorial: Getting serious

The mayor has spoken. And she wants the crime solved.

For the past couple of weeks, robberies and other petty crimes were reported with alarming regularity capped over the weekend by the death of a young nurse who was robbed and shot on her way home. This incident  shocked and saddened us. There is a certain tightness in our chest when we think of how   tenuous our security has become even if we are told repeatedly that the city has still the lowest crime rate in the country. Fear is beginning to fester in the hearts of the people especially when they hear news that homes, their erstwhile sanctuary, can now be breached by men intent to steal.

Solving the series of burglaries, snatching and other crimes,  is a yoke our chief of police has to bear. It’s a baptism of fire for newly-installed Davao City Police Chief Ronald dela Rosa but this will test his brilliance as a police officer. In one command conference last week, he ordered police precinct commanders to double their efforts to solve the cases and be more vigilant in protecting the communities they serve. He could not afford to fail us who depend on his leadership to bring us out of this confusion.

Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio and the people of Davao City want the killers of Marjorie Kwan in jail. Let there be no doubt that crime does not go unpunished in this city. No, Sir.
