Two villages placed under state of calamity

The city council has placed declared Tuesday two puroks in Brgy. I-A under state of calamity after these were hit with fire that rendered 70 families homeless a month ago.

The villages were placed under the state of calamity so that the city government could release part of its calamity fund for their rehabilitation.

The resolution, authored by Councilor Victorio U. Advincula, chair on the committee on social services, stated that among the affected areas were Purok 6 and 7 at Brgy. I-A, Poblacion District. The areas were hit by a fire on Dec. 9 last year.

The fire razed 50 houses.

“The barangay has no sufficient fund to support the need of all fire victims but to use and utilize its calamity funds,” the resolution cited.

The measure was approved under suspended rules on Tuesday.

The resolution stated that five percent of the barangay’s calamity fund will be used to help the fire victims. The approval of the measure prompted after the barangay requested the city council to pass the resolution for them to release funds.

The City Social Services and Development Office earlier provided financial assistance for the affected families.

The families with destroyed houses received P10,000 each, while those whose houses were slightly damaged, including those renters and sharers, gained P5,000 financial aid each.
